Boston Bruins General Manager Don Sweeney announced today that the team has signed Marc McLaughlin to a one-year, two-way contract for the 2023-2024 season. The deal pays McLaughlin $775,000 if he plays in the NHL and $100,000 in the AHL.

The 6-foot, 203-pound native of Billerica, Mass has 3 goals in 13 career NHL games. In 66 games for the Providence Bruins last season, McLaughlin netted 13 goals and 30 points.

McLaughlin remains waiver exempt for the 2023-2024 season depending on how many NHL games he plays. The threshold for him is 70 career NHL games before requiring waivers. He will remain a restricted free agent when his new deal expires. Because McLaughlin signed his first contract as a 23-year-old, he was eligible to file for salary arbitration this summer but chose against it. He retains arbitration rights for the summer of 2024.

It’s likely that McLaughlin will begin the season with the Providence Bruins therefore, this contract has no effect on the Bruins cap situation unless he plays in NHL games. The Bruins have Alec Regula, Reilly Walsh and Michael DiPietro yet to sign and all likely Providence bound. Trent Frederic and Jeremy Swayman, who both filed for arbitration are looking for contracts with the big club. And of course, we’re still waiting on Patrice Bergeron, who if he signs, will likely be the last one to put pen to paper once the Bruins cap situation is clear.
