Boston Bruins Monday Morning Prospect Update Week Ending: November 12, 2023

Philip Svedeback was named Hockey East’s Goaltender of the Week for the week ending November 5, 2023. Svedeback stopped 48 of 49 shots he faced with one shutout and 0.48 goals against average and .980 saver percentage.

On Wednesday, I’m not so sure it was the best effort on the season by the Swift Current Broncos, losing to the WHL’s newest franchise the Wenatchee Wild (formerly the Winnipeg Ice). For goaltender Reid Dyck though, he still gave his team a chance stopping 27 of 31 shots. But the Broncos were outshot 32-22 in this one – and by a 2 to 1 margin in the first and third periods. You couldn’t fault Dyck on any of the 4 goals he allowed and his teammates couldn’t muster much in the form of offence to give him a chance.

On Thursday, it was a last shot wins kind of game as the London Knights defeated with Windsor Spitfires 10-7. It looked promising early in this game for London as they built up a 2-0 lead but then Jackson Edward to two costly penalties back-to-back that pulled Windsor even. It’s a shame because Edward hasn’t been taking this kind of penalties this season and without affecting his physical game. Windsor had built up a 6-3 lead before London came storming back. Edward put London up 9-7 with his third of the season. He took a pass at the Windsor blueline, skated down the middle and fired a perfect wrister from the top of the circles off the post and in.

It was a busy but relatively unproductive Friday night for Bruins prospects. Let’s begin with the NCAA. Boston College dropped to 7-2-0 on the season as they fell 4-2 to Maine. Both Oskar Jellvik and Andre Gasseau were held off the scoresheet. Although Gasseau generated 5 shots on goal to lead BC, it was a tough night at the other end for him and his top line linemates. Gasseau was a minus-4.

U-Mass improved to 6-2-1 with a 4-1 victory over Vermont. While Dans Locmelis generated some chances for himself and teammates, he did not register a point. It was his fifth game of the season and to date he has just one goal to show for it. Much like Jellvik a season ago, there will be a portion of the fan base questioning him. Also, like Jellvik a year ago, I preached patience. It’s his first year on North American ice. There will be a transition period.

Cornell moved to 4-0-1 after taking care of Dartmouth in a shootout. Officially, it is a tie in the NCAA and this one ended 2-2. Ryan Walsh continues to impress and his hard work paid off, helping set up the tying goal on the powerplay with just 59 seconds remaining. It was his fifth point coming in his fifth game of the season. I’m not sure he can maintain a point per game, but he can put up some offence.

Harvard dropped its match to Colgate in a shootout but this officially ends 2-2 and drops Harvard to 0-1-3 on the season. Mason Langenbrunner is still looking for his first point of the season. I thought he would have moved up to the second pair this season, but he’s still stapled to the third pair. He really hasn’t been disappointing and Friday night generated the second most shots for Harvard.

Minnesota-Duluth dropped to 3-4-3 on the season with a 4-2 loss to North Dakota who are 6-2-1. On the losing side, Quinn Olson continued his hot play setting up the goal while trailing 3-0 to attempt a comeback. Through 10 games, Olson has 10 points for second spot on the team. Cole Spicer did not register a point. There is some nice chemistry between Olson and Spicer who have spent time together on the top line. On the winning side, Jake Schmaltz did not register a point centering North Dakota’s third line. He did generate some chances but nothing that paid off.

Providence College improved to 7-1-2 on the season with a 2-1 overtime victory over Northeastern. To say Philip Svedeback wasn’t busy in this one is an understatement as PC outshot Northeastern 40-8. Riley Duran opened the scoring with just under 25 seconds remaining in the opening period. Northeastern would tie it 22 seconds into the second. Duran had plenty of chances to end it in regulation leading all players with 7 shots on goal – one less than the entire Northeastern squad. The goal ended a five-game skid for Duran.

Boston University defeated Mass-Lowell 3-2 and improved to 5-3-1 on the season. Ty Gallagher had his mini-2-game point streak come to an end. Despite consistently being the seventh defenceman, Gallagher continues to generate some chances for his teammates from the back end.

I’m not sure what to say about the Swift Current Broncos 5-4 loss to their Provincial rivals, the Saskatoon Blades in WHL action. The Broncos were outshot 33-20 and scored some pretty easy goals and maybe a few more shots, well this would have had a different outcome. At the other end, Dyck made some spectacular saves but wasn’t getting much help as three of the goals he allowed came off second chance opportunities. He was at his best in the first period as the Broncos were outshot 16-5 but led on the scoreboard 2-1.

In the OHL, Edward scored on back-to-back nights. Calling for the puck at the left point, Edward moved to his right and quickly back to his left to open up a lane and fired a seeing eye wrister for his fourth goal of the season. It was a much more controlled game by Edward while still maintain his physical presence.

It was not a stellar night for Sioux Falls as they dropped a 6-2 decision to Omaha in USHL action. While Beckett Hendrickson did notch his 8th assist of the season, Chris Pelosi was held off the scoreboard. Chalk it up to an off night as the pair could not generate much in the form of offence that we have been accustomed to seeing early in the season.

If Friday was relatively quiet in terms of production, Saturday was a sleeper. Beginning in the NCAA, Boston College and Maine tied 2-2 although BC won the shootout. Jellvik is now pointless in 3 straight games after not registering a point in this one. He did score in his shootout attempt. Gasseau missed his attempt and the bright spot is that he was 8-1 on the faceoff dot.

Locmelis, standing in front of the goaltender on the PP pounced on a blocked puck and fired a backhand in for his second goal of the season. That put U-mas up 2-0 over Vermont, but the latter would score 6 unanswered goals for the 6-2 victory.

Harvard defeated Cornell 3-2 for Cornell’s first regulation loss of the season. Walsh did not register a point and his teammates had to bail him out early in the second period as he took a “contact to the head” penalty and a hooking penalty simultaneously. On the winning side, Langenbrunner finished a minus-1 and led the blueliners with 2 shots on goal. In an extra bit of news, Derek Mullahy, who was invited to the Bruins Development Camp in the summer, stopped 27 of 29 shots for Harvard for the win.

North Dakota defeated Minnesota- Duluth 2-0 and that means zeroes for Spicer and Olson. For North Dakota, Schmaltz also didn’t register a point and had 2 shots on goal and going 6-2 on the dot.

Providence College improved to 8-1-2 with a 5-2 win over Northeaster. Duran finished a plus-2 with 2 shots on goal but did not have a point. Svedeback stopped 21 of 23 shots to improve to 8-1-2 on the season.

Boston University improved to 6-3-1 with a 6-1 thrashing of UMass-Lowell. Gallagher got some much-needed increased ice time (for his confidence) but it did not result in anything on the scoreboard. We’ll see how Coach Jay Pandolfo decides to do with Gallagher moving forward.

In the OHL, London blanked Guelph 4-0. No points for Edward in this one but he finished a plus-3 with 2 shots on goal. One of his best games to date when it comes to transitioning.

Saving the best until last, Sioux Falls defeated Omaha 4-2 in USHL action. Hendrickson led the Sioux with 2 goals and an assist and finishing a plus-2 with 3 shots on goal. Pelosi set up Hendrickson’s game winning goal while firing 4 shots on goal and also finishing a plus-2. The two have formed some terrific chemistry. It’s too bad one will be heading to the University of Minnesota (Hendrickson) and the other to Quinnipiac (Pelosi). Watching them develop together in college would have been exciting.

Great news for Bruins fans north of the border. If you don’t have a way of watching some of the prospects playing in the NCAA, now you can! TSN has released it’s NCAA hockey coverage schedule for November on TSN+ and you will get to see Jellvik, Gasseau, Gallagher, Walsh, Duran, Svedeback, Locmelis and Langenbrunner – some a couple of time – all in the month of November. Follow this link for the complete schedule and make sure you bookmark it as games get added throughout the season. It’s only $8.00 per month and well worth it.

AROUND THE GLOBE

WHO’S HOT:

Philip Svedeback has won 3 straight and hasn’t had a regulation loss since the second game of the season going 7-0-2. He has a 1.74 GAA and .923 SV% on the season.

Beckett Hendrickson has a mini-2-game point streak going on 2 goals and 2 assists. He has points in 5 of his last 6 games with 4 goals and 3 assists. He’s found some consistency lately.

WHO’S WARM:

Chris Pelosi scored 7 goals in 12 games to start the season but is now goalless in his last 4 games. He has 1 goal and 3 assists in his last 6 games and will get back on track next week.

Quinn Olson got off to a great season in his graduation year but he has no goals and 3 assists in his last 6 games. He needs to find his consistent offensive production again if he’s going to earn an NHL deal.

WHO’S COLD:

Mason Langenbrunner is pointless in his first five games of the season.

Oskar Jellvik got off to a red-hot start but the engines have cooled as he is pointless in his last 3 games except for a shootout goal.

Andre Gasseau is in a slump of his own going pointless in his last 4 games and has just 1 assist in his last 7 games after what looked like a promising start to the season.

Reid Dyck has lost back-to-back for the first time this season stopping 55 of 34 shots he faced.

Riley Duran has just 1 goal and no assists in his last 7 games. I’ve said it before that Duran brings much more than just points to the game, but at some point, playing on the top line you need to produce.
