In Thursday’s SHL action, Jonathan Myrenberg went pointless in his 12th consecutive game as Linkoping dropped a 4-2 decision to Vaxjo. Myrenberg did not register a SOG and had 2 hits in 17:06 TOI. I know I’m sounding like a broken record at this point, but I’m still not concerned about point production this season.
In the USHL, Beckett Hendrickson had a goal that was assisted by who else? Chris Pelosi. Hendrickson’s 13th of the season put Sioux Falls up 3-2 early in the third. However, Dubuque evened the score with 6:06 remaining in the third period. Sioux Falls would score the winner just :35 seconds into overtime to improve to 20-15-6-0 and third spot in the Western Conference.
On Friday, beginning with the OHL, Jackson Edward served the first of his two-game suspension and the London Knights lost for the first time in 15 games at the hands of the Peterborough Petes by a 3-2 score in a shootout.
In the NCAA, it was a battle of the number one and number two ranked teams in the country as Boston University faced Boston College in the first of back-to-back meetings between the two teams. BC took a 2-0 lead into the third when BU pulled within one at the 13:23 mark. However, two empty net goals, including one by Andre Gasseau, his 8th of the season sent BC to a 4-1 victory. Oskar Jellvik was pointless for BC as was Ty Gallagher for BU.
Cornell blanked Harvard 2-0 to improve to 11-4-3 on the season. Ryan Walsh was pointless in this one and finished with 3 SOG and was 10 for 17 on the dot. Last week I told you Walsh’s production comes in bunches and he is now pointless in 3 games, so expect him to break out again for one of his modest streaks. On the losing side, Harvard dropped to 3-12-3 on the season and obviously, Mason Langenbrunner was held off the scoresheet. The blueliner led Harvard with 3 SOG and he finished a minus-1.
Minnesota-Duluth defeated Miami by a score of 6-2. Quinn Olson snapped a 5-game pointless streak with two primary helpers and led his squad with 4 SOG as the team improved to 9-11-4 on the season. Olson is now third in team scoring with 3 goals and 14 assists on the year.
North Dakota defeated Denver 5-2 to improve to 17-6-2 on the season. Jake Schmaltz ended a 9-game pointless streak with an assist on an ENG with 28 seconds remaining. Schmaltz is still looking for his first goal of the season in what was his 21st game.
Providence thumped Mass-Lowell by a score of 7-2 and improved to 13-7-2 on the year. Philip Svedeback stopped 22 of 24 shots he faced for the win. More importantly, he looked better in the blue paint than he has the last several games. Riley Duran was in on the offence with a goal and an assist and led all skaters with 5 SOG. It was Duran’s first goal in 7 games.
In the USHL, the Sioux Falls Stampede dropped a 3-2 overtime decision to Dubuque and dropped their record to 20-15-3-1 on the season. Beckett Hendrickson scored his 14th goal of the season (on 4 SOG) on a wicked shot that Dubuque goaltender Dylan Johnson is still looking for. Chris Pelosi, who also had 4 SOG was held off the scoresheet.
On Saturday, the London Knights lost for the second consecutive game after winning 14 straight, this team by a score of 5-4 to the Erie Otters. It was Edward’s second game missed of a two-game suspension.
In the SHL Linkoping defeated Lulea 4-2 and fifth place in the SHL standings, just 4 points out of second place with a game in hand. Remember the SHL uses a 3-2-1-point system. Myrenberg played just 15:35 in this one and was held off the scoresheet for the 13th consecutive game. Again, points aren’t a concern for me this season for a 20-year-old blueliner playing against men. I’d rather he learn the defensive game. He’s a plus-10 on the season, good for 11th among 140+ defencemen in the SHL.
In the NCAA, Boston College got the best of Boston University again, this time by a score of 4-3. Jellvik was at his best tonight creating opportunities and was awarded with two helpers in the game, both coming at critical times. Unfortunately for Gasseau, his 6-game point streak came to a halt as he was held off the score sheet. Gallagher did not play for BU in their loss.
Cornell and Dartmouth officially played to a 2-2 tie although Dartmouth won the shootout. Almost on que and early, just 5:24 into the game, Walsh scored his 7th goal of the season to put Cornell up. After giving up 2 goals, Cornell scored a powerplay goal with 11 seconds remaining in regulation to send the game to the extra frame. Again, it will be finding consistency that is key for Walsh.
Harvard defeated Colgate 6-3 and another solid effort by Langenbrunner for a team that hasn’t had a lot to cheer about this season. Langenbrunner set up the goal to put Harvard up to stay in the middle frame and they never looked back. He was solid in a shut down role finishing a plus-2.
North Dakota defeated Denver 4-2. Schmaltz did not register a point and had 2 SOG and was 4 for 5 on the dot. I’ve been tough on Schmaltz this season, but he’s done well defensively, maybe even excelled, but he showed a lot of offensive promise in the USHL and even as a freshman in the NCAA. Since then, he has been surpassed on the Bruins center depth chart. The question now becomes: “has he done enough defensively to warrant an NHL contract from the Bruins moving forward?”
Providence College defeated UMass-Lowell 4-3 in overtime. Nice to see Duran rewarded with a goal and an assist after giving an all-out effort during a tough stretch production wise for him. He scored the game’s opening goal and then set up the goal that got Providence back into it and a chance to force overtime. It wasn’t a great performance by Svedeback despite getting the win and improving to 14-7-2 on the season. He stopped 12 of 15 shots he faced and has seen his save percentage drop below .900 and that puts him 58th in the NCAA.
On Sunday, the Swift Current Broncos dropped a 3-2 decision in overtime to the Saskatoon Blades. Reid Dyck stopped 31 of 34 shots with several highlight reel saves. He didn’t get much help offensively from his teammates as Saskatoon was outshooting them 24-12 by the end of the second period.

Here’s a look at the Providence Bruins leaders. You will notice a column called “value” This is provided by our friends at Benchrates. Created by a retired hockey player, Benchrates has created and algorithm that computes values in real time. The value you see is the cap hit value they’ve earned this season to date. Give them a look and check out their site.
