Boston Bruins Monday Morning Prospect Update Week Ending: February 25, 2024

Reid Dyck is on a roll. On Monday, he stopped 25 of 27 shots as the Swift Current Broncos defeated the Moose Jaw Warriors 5-2. Dyck won his eighth consecutive start and has helped the Broncos jump into 4th place in the WHL Eastern Conference standings. Dyck improved to 17-6-2 on the season. For comparison, the Broncos are 13-13-4 without Dyck. For the first time this season and with thanks in large part to Dyck, the Swift Current Broncos are ranked in the CHL’s top-10 teams.

In the OHL, the London Knights defeated the Windsor Spitfires 7-2. Jackson Edward scored for the first time since November 15, ending a 30-game draught. He finished with 2 SOG and was a plus-2 in 21:36 TOI. Edward is now fifth in the OHL with a plus-36.

On Thursday, SHL action saw Linkoping beat Malmo 3-1. Jonathan Myrenberg ended a slump when he scored the game’s opening goal. He finished the game with a plus-1 and 1 SOG but only 12:33 TOI. He still doesn’t appear 100% since returning from injury. With 8 games remaining on the season, Linkoping remains in 5th place just 5 points out of third.

On a busy Friday night, starting in the WHL, the Swift Current Broncos defeated the Medicine Hat Tigers 4-1. It wasn’t a busy night for Dyck as he stopped 20 of 21 shots and lost his shutout bid with under 8 minutes remaining but he won his 9th consecutive start. The Broncos moved into 4th spot in the eastern conference standings an are just 4 points out of second.

In the OHL Edward was at it again as the London Knights blanked the Kingston Frontenacs 5-0. Edward had a helper, was a plus-2 and had 2 SOG through 2 periods. However, just over a minute into the third a melee began and it sure looked like Edward was going to go in what would have been a true heavyweight bout. One of his Knights teammates came in and Edward went after another Frontenac and was ejected for unsportsmanlike conduct. Could he be hearing from the league again? Yes, but not for his on-ice actions. On his way to the dressing room, Edward interfered with a camera and the OHL frowns upon that.

In the USHL, the Sioux Falls Stampede dropped their 7th in a row by a 2-1 margin in overtime to the Waterloo Black Hawks. The loss drops the Stampede to 21-21-4-1 and in 5th place in the western conference and solidly in the playoff picture. Chris Pelosi had the Stampede’s lone goal when the puck came to him alone in front of the Black Hawk’s net and he fired home his 17th of the season. He led both sides with 5 SOG. Beckett Hendrickson did not register a point and had 2 SOG.

In the NCAA, Andre Gasseau displayed his shot when he scored the fifth goal for Boston College in their 7-1 win over Vermont. It was Gasseau’s 10th goal of the season and equaled his output from a season ago. Oskar Jellvik set up the tally with his 20th assist on the season and giving him 32 points, almost doubling his output from a season ago.

U-Mass defeated UNH by a 3-2 score. It was the third line centered by Dans Locmelis that brought home the victory. Locmelis combined with his season long linemates to put U-Mass up 2-1 late in the second period. Then with less than 2 minutes remaining and an empty net at the other end, the trio were out protecting the lead when Locmelis set up the ENG giving him two helpers on the night.

Cornell dropped a heartbreaker to Clarkson by a 4-3 margin in overtime. Ryan Walsh had an assist on a powerplay goal that evened the score at 2-2 late in the second period. Cornell would take the lead 2 minutes into the third but Clarkson would tie it with 26 seconds remaining in regulation before giving up the winner with 58 seconds remaining in OT. Walsh would have 1 SOG and went 9 for 12 on the dot.

Harvard would lose 6-2 to Union and continue on their tough season. Mason Langenbrunner did not have a good night finishing with a team worst minus-3.

North Dakota easily handled Minnesota-Duluth by a score of 6-0. On the winning side, Jake Schmaltz did not register a point and had just 1 SOG while going 7 for 9 on the dot. On the losing side, Quinn Olson obviously did not register a point, was a team worst minus-3 and had just 1 SOG. I could be way off here, but I don’t see either getting an NHL contract from the Bruins.

Stop the presses! Ty Gallagher actually played somewhat of a regular shift in Boston University’s 6-1 win over Connecticut. Gallagher did not factor in the scoring and was a plus-1. It was nice to see him actually in a game for a change.

On Saturday, beginning off the ice, the OHL suspended Edward for two games for interfering with a television camera on his way to the dressing room after being ejected from the game Friday night. It’s his third two-game suspension of the season.

Frolunda dropped yet another game in J20 Nationell action, this one by a 3-2 score to Lulea. Kristian Kostadinski was ornery in this one and it’s something Bruins fans will be happy to hear. But he hasn’t hit the scoresheet in 10 games and considering the start to the year, that is a bit concerning. Casper Nassen on the other hand has been scoring somewhat regularly since his return from injury and notched his 9th of the season in the loss. Six of his ten goals and eight of his twenty-one points have come in his last ten games.

In the SHL, Linkoping was edged by Modo 3-2 in overtime in what was the best game I’ve seen on the season from Myrenberg, and I’ve seen most of them. Myrenberg had an assist, 3 SOG, 2 hits and a blocked shot and was a plus-a in 21:23 TOI and was noticeable at both ends of the ice.

In the WHL the Swift Current Broncos have all but secured a playoff spot and have their sights set at the top spot of the Central Division so they are riding Reid Dyck at every opportunity. Dyck stopped 29 of 32 shots as they defeated Medicine Hat 4-3 in overtime to move within 3 points of top spot (with a game in hand). Dyck was at his best Saturday stopping a 2 on 0 as well as 3 other breakaways.

In the USHL Sioux Falls dropped yet another game, this one by a 5-2 score to Des Moines Buccaneers. It was a rough night all around for the Stampede. Pelosi and Hendrickson were both held off the score sheet and finishing a minus-1. Pelosi managed 1 SOG.

In the NCAA, Boston College defeated Vermont by a score of 4-2. Jellvik and Gasseau were both held off the score sheet. Jellvik finished a plus-1 with 1 SOG while Gasseau was even with 3 SOG. BC just keeps coasting along with a 25-5-1 record after the win.

U-Mass dropped the rematch to UNH by they same 3-2 score they won by on Friday but this one went into overtime. Locmelis set up the goal that put U-Mass ahead in the third period but UNH would tie it with just over 2 minutes remaining to send it into overtime and complete the comeback. Locmelis finished with the one helper, 1 SOG and was 8 for 13 on the dot. The third line of Locmelis, Jack Musa and Cole O’Hara having been clipping along the last few games.

Cornell and St Lawrence officially battled to a 2-2 tie but Cornell would take the shootout. Things didn’t look good for Cornell as they trailed 2-0 with 1:31 remaining when they scored to pull within one. Then, with 6 seconds remaining Walsh set up the tying goal to send it to overtime, which solved nothing. Walsh again was instrumental scoring in the shootout and forcing extra rounds when Cornell finally won it in the seventh round.

Harvard and Rensselaer also officially battled to a 2-2 draw but Harvard took the shootout. Langenbrunner had zeroes right across the board in this rematch.

North Dakota defeated Minnesota-Duluth 4-2. Olson had no points with 3 SOG and finished a minus-1 in the loss. On the winning side, Schmaltz had zeroes across the board and was 9 for 13 on the dot.

Providence College edged UMass-Lowell by a score of 2-1. Riley Duran finished a minus-1 with 2 SOG and no points while Philip Svedeback was solid in the win stopping 19 of 20 shots he faced.

On Sunday, Frolunda finally won a game defeating Skelleftea 9-6. Nassen scored twice in the win while Kostadinski ended a 10-game draught with 2 assists. Both players finished a plus-1.

Here’s a look at the Providence Bruins leaders. You will notice a column called “value” This is provided by our friends at Benchrates. Created by a retired hockey player, Benchrates has created and algorithm that computes values in real time. The value you see is the cap hit value they’ve earned this season to date. Give them a look and check out their site.

Beckett Hendrickson is pointless in his last 3 games coming off a stretch where he had 6 goals and 6 assists in 9 games.

Quinn Olson is pointless in 3 games and has 1 goal and no assists in his last 9 games.

Jake Schmaltz is pointless in 3 games and has no goals and 2 assists in his last 17 games.

Craig Button released his top-50 NHL-affiliated prospects and only one of the Bruins prospects made the cut: Fabian Lysell at number 48.
