Jake DeBrusk Finds Stability, Consistency

Fans have been tough on Jake DeBrusk, and I have been critical of him at times, but one thing has always been true in his seven seasons in the NHL:

DeBrusk’s consistency is heavily reliant on stability in his life, team, and linemates. I have discussed extensively on multiple podcasts and platforms over the years. DeBrusk performs best when COVID-19 is not affecting everyday life. He performs best when he’s not being shifted around from one line to another. He’s at his best when he has some sort of contract stability, and when the trade deadline has already passed and he knows he’s not going anywhere soon.

What we have seen since March 8 is stability and in turn, consistency. That raises the million(s) dollar question for General Manager Don Sweeney.

Both DeBrusk and Sweeney had mentioned in public about a potential extension before the start of the season. However, it has been six months since that announcement and we are still waiting for any updates. Some people are nervous about the lack of information, while others are anxious to hear any news. Some do not want the extension to happen at all. It seems likely that the reason for the delay is that the two sides are not in agreement on the terms of the extension.

I have been asked many times about my opinion of his value, but I have always replied with the same answer: I don’t know. I’m usually good at this sort of thing, but this one has me stumped. I’ve thought about it and come up with what I would offer him.

2024-2025 – $4,700,000 – 3 team no trade

2025-2026 – $5,100,000 – 3 team no trade

2026-2027 – $4,500,000 + $1,000,000 signing bonus – 5 team no trade

2027-2028 – $5,900,000

The contract amounts to an average annual value of $5,300,000. The three-team no-trade clause offers him some security, which extends to five teams for the 2026-2027 season. This period also coincides with the next feasible league expansion. Additionally, the signing bonus provides him with some protection during a potential lock-out situation.

I understand that it is unlikely that DeBrusk would sign that contract. I also understand that the Bruins may not be willing to make a big commitment. However, I believe that a creative solution may be necessary since their current negotiations have not led to a resolution.

I do believe that with some stability, the DeBrusk we are seeing now is what we’ll get.

  1. If DeBrusk hits free agency, he will likely find the same tepid reception that Tyler Bertuzzi received. I dont see another team offering more than what you proposed.

    1. Completely disagree. There is more cap room available this offseason vs last. I fully expect him to get a long term contract that is larger than Dom suggests

  2. I could see Jake wanting longer term, but this seems as expected to me. Lock him up, get him an offensively creative centre, and you’ll get the best Jake which is pretty darn good. This gives him what he’s looking for through his prime years and allows him to maximize that. Following this term he still has another shot at a good payday if he’s playing well.

But again since he craves consistency/ comfort/ known situation I could see him wanting longer.
