Boston Bruins 2022 draft pick Cole Spicer told Matt Wellens of the Duluth New Tribune that he won’t be playing hockey “for the foreseeable future.”
“I need to figure out some personal and mental stuff first.” Spicer added, “Right now, I need to take a step away and figure a couple things out.” He told Wellens.
In his second season with the Bulldogs, Spicer scored 5 goals and four assists in 17 games before his season came to an end when he was deemed academically ineligible to continue.
Spicer continued to participate in practices and was still attending classes. He also enrolled in summer courses in order to work his way back for the upcoming season.
Spicer told Bruins reporters at development camp “It’s tough to watch, but at the same time, I had to figure some stuff out and get my head back to where it needed to be. I’m feeling good now. So, I’m excited for the year.”
If Spicer does want to make a return, he could join fellow draft picks Kristian Kostadinski and Jonathan Morello with Dubuque Fighting Saints of the USHL for his final year of junior eligibility. Dubuque drafted Spicer in the USHL draft back in May. He could also enter the NCAA transfer portal, but Wellens does not believe that is a viable option.
Whatever Spicer does decide to do, I wish him all the best and hope he finds himself in a good place. That is what is most important.

I feel really bad for the kid. Hope he is getting the help he needs and that he can continue his career at the USHL level if that’s what he desires to do.
