The Boston Bruins put Riley Tufte on waivers on Friday, which was expected. This was discussed on both podcasts last week, and I anticipated this move before their game against the Dallas Stars. It’s done now, and that’s what matters.
But what’s next?
It does not matter if Tufte is claimed or if he clears waivers and is assigned to Providence. In either case, the Bruins can add an average annual value of $1,108,460 and still stay within the salary cap by the end of the regular season.
That opens a door for a Tyler Johnson signing or a Fabian Lysell call-up. As long as Johnson’s contract carries an AAV of less than $1,108,460. Lysell’s AAV is $863,333.
Johnson performed well during the preseason, providing valuable support on the powerplay where the Bruins have been facing challenges. On the other hand, Lysell had a tough camp, and his first two AHL games this season were underwhelming. However, he has shown significant improvement in his last two games.
During today’s practice, the Bruins placed Matthew Poitras on the second line as the right winger. Initially, I opposed this move, but I changed my opinion last week when it became clear that other options were not effective. This adjustment may create a spot on the wing with Trent Frederic and Morgan Geekie playing on the third line. Justin Brazeau took on that position during practice today.
I used to think that Lysell should not play until he is fully ready. However, I have changed my mind. I now see that his skills are valuable and can help offset any mistakes he might make. And he won’t be adding mistakes, only replacing someone else’s. Johnson has a lot of experience and skills, and he could be an important presence in the locker room and on the bench.
Very few people know what direction the Bruins are leaning towards, but everyone knows that something needs to change.
Now we wait.
