Boston Bruins Monday Morning Prospect Update Week Ending: November 3, 2024

Casper Nassen

Miami lost a close 3-2 overtime match to Rensselaer on Friday, which brought their record to 3-4-2, with the game being officially counted as a tie. Nassen ended the game with a minus-1 rating and did not record any shots on goal in 15 minutes and 40 seconds of ice time. As a freshman, he has scored 3 goals and provided 3 assists, showing good potential; however, Nassen will need to improve his consistency in future games.

They would drop the back half of the back-to-back by a score of 2-1. Nassen did not factor in on Miami’s lone goal and finished with 2 SOG.

Dans Locmelis

Locmelis scored his first goal of the season on Saturday, helping U-Mass win against American International 4-3. He achieved this on a well-placed deflection during a power play. Although this goal should have secured the victory for U-Mass, American International made an effort to come back but ultimately fell short, making Locmelis’ goal the game-winner. He also contributed by assisting on the first goal of the game. Locmelis is playing an average of 17:23 minutes on the ice as the center for the third line and currently ranks third in team scoring with 9 points in 8 games. He has recorded 4 multi-point games this season.

Oskar Jellvik, Andre Gasseau, Dean Letourneau

Letourneau returned to action on Friday and recorded his first NCAA point, providing an assist on the opening goal as Boston College won against St. Cloud State 4-1. He won a faceoff in the offensive zone, fought for the 50/50 puck in the circle, and passed it across to set up the goal. Letourneau was 3 for 10 in faceoffs and ended the game with a plus-1 rating. Oskar Jellvik did not score but won 7 out of 10 faceoffs. Andre Gasseau also finished with a plus-1 and had one shot on goal. In the final two minutes, Gasseau was interfered with and retaliated, leading to a scuffle that resulted in both players being ejected from the game.

BC won the second game of the series on Saturday, defeating St Cloud 2-1. None of the three prospects recorded any points. Jellvik and Gasseau both had a minus-1 rating, while Letourneau finished with an even rating. Their performance in faceoffs was also poor, with Jellvik winning 4 out of 12, Gasseau failing to win any of his 3 attempts, and Letourneau winning 3 out of 9. Jellvik has gone four games without a point, which last happened during his freshman year from January 14 to February 6, 2022.

Jake Schmaltz

North Dakota dropped a 4-1 decision to Cornell on Friday, evening their record to 3-3-0. In 16:49 TOI Schmaltz had 2 SOG and was 6 for 11 on the dot, but failed to hit the scoresheet. Interestingly, Schmaltz was moved up to center the third line when in the previous 5 games, he was stapled to fourth line center duties.

They would drop the second game on Saturday by a score of 5-3. Schmaltz centered the third line once again and in 21:29 TOI was a minus-1 with no shots on goal and was 19 for 30 on the dot.

Beckett Hendrickson

Minnesota improved to 6-1-0 with a 3-1 victory over Penn State on Friday. With just 10:48 TOI Hendrickson managed 2 SOG and was an even plus/minus but did not register a point. As the third line left wing he brought a high level of energy once again.

On Saturday, Minnesota blanked Penn State 1-0. Despite the win, Minnesota found themselves chasing the puck most of the game as they only managed 12 SOG.

Ty Gallagher

Colorado College secured a 3-2 win against Air Force, bringing their record to an impressive 5-0-0 for the season. Gallagher topped his team with 23 minutes and 32 seconds of ice time while playing on the top defensive pair. He registered one shot on goal and maintained an even plus/minus rating. Despite a strong start to the season, he has not scored any points in his last three games.

Colorado College won their 6th straight to start the season with a 6-1 win over Air Force Saturday. With a goal and an assist, Gallagher snapped out of his mini slump. He finished a plus-2 with 2 SOG. Even with his mini slump, he is still averaging a point per game.

Chris Pelosi, Elliott Groenewold

Quinnipiac beat Holy Cross by a score of 3-0 on Saturday, bringing their record to 3-3-0. Groenewold scored his first career goal, which was also the game-winning goal, early in the first period. In a moment of chaotic action in front of the Holy Cross goal, the puck landed on Groenewold’s stick. He found an opening and sent it through a crowd of players. Additionally, he assisted on the empty net goal, marking his first career assist. Groenewold had 3 shots on goal and played for 18 minutes and 38 seconds. Pelosi played for 16 minutes and 46 seconds, won 7 out of 16 face-offs, had 3 shots on goal, but did not score for the third game in a row.

Ryan Walsh

Cornell’s season started with a strong performance, as they defeated North Dakota 4-1 on Friday. Walsh won 10 out of 18 faceoffs and had 2 shots on goal in 19 minutes of ice time, but he did not score. He played between Ondrej Psenicka and Dalton Bancroft, which means he will have plenty of chances to contribute this season if he continues in that role.

In the rematch on Sunday, Cornell once again secured a victory, winning by a score of 5-3. Walsh tied the game with a goal less than a minute into the third period and later helped secure the win by assisting on the empty-net goal with 1:16 left. He also provided an assist on the first goal of the game. Walsh recorded three shots on goal, a plus-2 rating, and won 14 out of 25 faceoffs, playing for 20 minutes and 39 seconds.

Mason Langenbrunner

Harvard began its season on Friday with a 2-1 loss to Dartmouth. Langenbrunner finished the game with a minus-1 rating and recorded two shots on goal in 12 minutes and 16 seconds of ice time. He is now playing on the third defensive pair, which is a situation to monitor as the season continues.

Jonathan Myrenberg

Myrenberg is still out with an injury and Linkoping does not play again until November 14. The club is hoping he can make his return then.

Loke Johansson

The Saint John Sea Dogs defeated the Moncton Wildcats 3-2 in overtime on Thursday. Even with the loss, the Wildcats still hold the top position in the Eastern Conference of the QMJHL standings. Johansson did not register a point and had an even plus/minus rating with one shot on goal. In his 13 games so far, he has only gone without a shot twice. More importantly, he is continuing to grow and improve as a player.

On Saturday, Moncton won again beating Val-d’Or by a score of 7-4. It was somewhat a quiet game for Johansson, who finished a plus-1 with 3 SOG. It is somewhat surprising how he gets his shots through on target.

Finally, on Sunday it was another victory, this one by a score of 5-1 over Halifax. Johansson did not register a point, had 4 SOG and 3 hits and was a force defensively, which is going to be his bread and butter.

Kristian Kostadinski, Jonathan Morello, Cole Spicer

Dubuque took sole possession of top spot in USHL Eastern Conference with a 4-3 shootout win against Waterloo on Tuesday. After falling behind 2-0 in the second period, Morello played a key role in setting up a power play goal that sparked the team’s comeback. He ended the match with one assist, one shot on goal, and a minus-1 rating. Kostadinski had zeroes across the board.

On Friday, Dubuque defeated the Lincoln Stars 4-1, marking their fifth consecutive win. Morello recorded three shots on goal and finished the game with an even plus/minus rating. Kostadinski also had three shots on goal but achieved a game-high plus-4 rating. It is clear that Kostadinski is progressing faster than anticipated, while Morello’s development has not been as noticeable.

Kostadinski scored his first goal of the season Saturday as Dubuque defeated Tri-City 4-3. He was also a plus-2 with 1 SOG. Morello also finished a plus-2 with 1 SOG but did not register a point. The most surprising stat so far this season: For as big and as physical Kostadinski is, he has only accumulated 6 minutes in penalties through 14 games.

Philip Svedeback

Svedeback stopped 23 of 26 shots on Friday as Providence College defeated New Hampshire 6-3. Svedeback improved to 3-1-0 with a 2.50 GAA and .907 save percentage. Svedeback was especially solid in the first period allowing his team to jump out to a 3-0 lead and 5-0 before the 6-minute mark of the second period.

Svedeback did not play in Saturday’s 3-0 win over New Hampshire.

Here’s a look at the Providence Bruins leaders. You will notice a column called “Benchrates” This is provided by our friends at Benchrates. Created by a retired hockey player, Benchrates has created an algorithm that computes values in real time. The value you see is the cap hit value they’ve earned this season to date. Give them a look and check out their site.

Joey Abate and Riley Tufte scored their first goals of the season on Wednesday as Providence opened up a 2-0 lead of Belleville only to have the Senators tie the game and force a shootout. Brett Harrison was the only skater to score in the skills competition to secure the victory for Providence. Michael DiPietro faced 37 shots and was brilliant when he had to be. Tyler Pitlick was assessed a major and game misconduct for boarding just 6 minutes into the game. Billy Sweezey came to the aide of his goaltender when Jeremy Davies took a run at DiPietro and was penalized. Not a lot of positives despite the win. Like the big club, there appears to be too many passengers.

On Friday, the P-Bruins headed to La Belle Province to play the Laval Rocket in the first of two back-to-back games. DiPietro was in goal again, showing the team’s growing trust in him. He made 14 saves out of 16 shots in a 2-1 loss, but the defeat wasn’t solely his fault as he had to make some crucial stops. With the team down 1-0, Georgii Merkulov scored his first goal of the season. Ian Mitchell moved up from the blueline, made contact to free the puck and when Merkulov seized a loose puck, he skated to the left dot and scored. Many of the same problems affecting the big club are also present in Providence, including too many penalties, a struggling power play that allowed a shorthanded goal, and costly turnovers.

In Saturday’s rematch, Providence outshot Laval 33-22 but lost where it counts most on the scoreboard 6-3. Brandon Bussi got the start and stopped 16 of 21 shots. Simply put; he needs to be better as he dropped to 0-4-0 on the season. Tufte scored his second of the season on a deflection from a shot with purpose from Frederic Brunet, who also had a fight in this game. Pitlick also scored his second of the season and like Brunet, had a fight in this rematch. Vinni Lettieri scored his team leading fifth of the season. Fabian Lysell missed both games in Quebec with an injury.

The P-Bruins are a league worst 5.4% on the powerplay; 20th on the penalty kill at 81.3%; In a 7-way tie for fourth last with 6 points in the league.
