Georgii Merkulov’s Career to Date

Georgii Merkulov, born on October 10, 2000, in Ryazan, Russia, has made significant strides in his hockey career. He began his journey with Kapitan Stupino in the MHL (Junior Hockey League) before moving to the VHL (Supreme Hockey League) with HC Tambov. His talent caught the eye of Ohio State University, where he played college hockey and led all NCAA freshmen with 20 goals in his first season.

In April 2022, Merkulov signed a three-year, entry-level contract with the Boston Bruins and was assigned to their AHL affiliate, the Providence Bruins. He quickly made an impact, earning a spot on the AHL All-Rookie Team after his first full professional season, where he scored 23 goals and 55 points. His impressive performance continued in the 2023-24 season, leading the Providence Bruins with 30 goals and 65 points.

At the time of writing this, Merkulov once again leads Providence with 39 points in 40 games, good for ninth in the AHL. His 28 assists are second among AHL skaters

Merkulov earned his first NHL call-up in December 2023 and made his NHL debut against the New Jersey Devils. Although he didn’t record a point in his initial stint, he was recalled again in November 2024 and scored his first NHL point against the St. Louis Blues.

Does He Deserve a Legitimate Chance with the Boston Bruins?

Merkulov has consistently demonstrated his scoring ability and offensive prowess in the AHL, making him a asset worthy of consideration for the Bruins. His performance in Providence has been nothing short of stellar, and his brief stints in the NHL have shown glimpses of his potential at the highest level.

The Bruins are in need of depth and scoring, and Merkulov could be the answer. His work ethic, determination, and ability to produce points make him a strong candidate for a more permanent role with the Bruins. With continued development and opportunities, Merkulov could fill a role for the team. But without a real opportunity, we will never know.

What do you think about his chances with the Bruins?

Scouting Report

Strengths:

Offensive Skills: Merkulov is known for his excellent offensive skills, including playmaking, vision and a powerful one-timer. Puck possession skills are also plentiful.

Playmaking Ability: He has a pass-first and can make tape-to-tape passes with both the forehand and backhand, allowing him to set up teammates for quality scoring chances.

Speed and Agility: Merkulov is quick enough but lacks a separation gear and his first strides need improving. But his edgework is very good.

Power Play Specialist: He scored 11 goals on the powerplay last season, showcasing his strong one-timer. However, with just 1 PPG this season, it has seen a sharp decline.

Areas for Improvement:

Physicality: There are legitimate concerns about his ability to handle the physicality of NHL hockey.

High Traffic Areas: He needs to go to high traffic areas more. We often hear the Boston brass speak about getting to the inside and there needs to be improvement in this area. You won’t find success in the NHL playing on the perimeter.

Defensive Play: While not weak defensively, he won’t be mistaken as a Selke candidate.

Potential:

NHL Upside: Merkulov has the potential to be a middle-six center/winger with a moderate offensive ceiling. He was at his best recently skating on the left wing with Matthew Poitras when the latter was sent to Providence.
