Fabian Lysell, a Swedish winger drafted 21st overall by the Boston Bruins in the 2021 NHL Entry Draft, has been a topic of debate among hockey enthusiasts, especially fans of the Bruins. With his impressive skill set and potential, many expected him to make a significant impact in the NHL. However, his journey has been anything but straightforward. Here, I will explore Lysell’s scouting report, his career to date, and why he hasn’t yet secured a permanent spot in the NHL.
Scouting Report
Lysell is known for his exceptional speed, agility, and puck-handling skills. Standing at 5’11” and weighing 181 lbs, he possesses a dynamic offensive game that should make him a constant threat on the ice. His skating is nearly perfect, with excellent technique, and excellent edge work, allowing him to speed past defenders with ease. Lysell’s vision and playmaking abilities are also noteworthy, as he can make passes through sticks and bodies. When he wants too.
Despite his offensive abilities, Lysell’s game isn’t without flaws. His defensive play has been a point of concern, and he has been working on becoming more responsible away from the puck, with some success. Additionally, his consistency has been questioned, as he has had periods of underwhelming performance. And he doesn’t always use his teammates in the best ways possible.
Career to Date
Lysell’s journey began in Sweden, where he played for Frölunda HC in the J20 Nationell and Luleå HF in the SHL. He showed promise in the Swedish junior leagues, putting up impressive numbers. In the 2020-21 season, he played 26 games for Luleå HF, scoring two goals and one assist.
In 2021, Lysell made the move to North America, joining the Vancouver Giants in the WHL. He had a standout season, recording 22 goals and 40 assists in 53 games.
Lysell spent the next two seasons with the Providence Bruins in the AHL. In the 2022-23, he scored 14 goals along with 23 assists in 54 games. In 2023-24, he improved his numbers, scoring 15 goals and 35 assists in 56 games. To date this season, his third in the AHL he has 8 goals and 18 assists in 38 games. Despite his success in the AHL, Lysell has yet to earn an opportunity with Boston, except for one game, let alone make a significant impact in the NHL.
Why Hasn’t Lysell Been Given an NHL Opportunity?
Several factors have contributed to Lysell’s lack of NHL opportunities. Firstly, the Boston Bruins have had deep rosters prior to this season, making it difficult for young players to break into the lineup. Lysell’s inconsistency and defensive lapses have definitely played a role. But more importantly, he is still learning to utilize his teammates and recognizing what the best opportunities for the team are.
In December 2024, Lysell made his NHL debut against the Columbus Blue Jackets. His skills, particularly playing with speed, were at the forefront. His issues, which have been discussed at nauseum, were no where to be seen. However, it was just one game and he was quickly sent back to Providence. This tells me that the Bruins think he needs more time in the AHL to become a regular player in the NHL.
Conclusion
Is Fabian Lysell a bust? It’s too soon to say for sure. He hasn’t yet made his mark in the NHL, but his talent and potential are clear. If he continues to develop his skills, especially on defense, he could become an important player for the Boston Bruins. He has one more season left on his Entry Level Contract, and he deserves that time to show what he can do.
But he’s got to want it and then go out and earn it.
