The Providence Bruins announced today that they have signed 2021 seventh round pick (217th overall) Ty Gallagher to a 2-year AHL beginning with the 2025-26 season. He will finish this season with the Providence Bruins on an Amateur Tryout Agreement.
Gallagher’s season came to an end on the weekend with Colorado College after losing to the University of Denver. The 21-year-old blueliner set career highs in goals (9) and points (26) and for most of the season led Colorado in scoring. He spent the previous 3 seasons with Boston University.
During his draft year, NHL Central Scouting had Gallagher as the 53rd ranked North American skater and the 20th ranked North American defenseman. He was coming off of two seasons with the National Team Development Program where he set a record for most goals by an NTDP defenseman (24).
Gallagher is often wrongfully characterized as an offensive defenseman. Sure, he is capable of making accurate passes from the d-zone to start the transition. It is equally factual that he is more than capable of jumping into the rush with perfect timing. And it’s also a fact that he can get his shot through traffic and on target. And let’s not forget his one-timers: bombs from the left faceoff circle on the powerplay that would make even David Pastrnak proud.
But Gallagher is more than just an offensive defenseman. He plays in all situations, plays against the opposition’s top players, blocks shots, is usually first to retrieve pucks and lead the breakout and he is more than willing to join the physical battles. He led all Colorado defensemen in plus/minus with a plus-7. In fact, there was only one other defenseman in Colorado to finish in positive territory (minimum 18 games played).
All while leading his team in TOI with 21:41 average per game.
I’ve enjoyed following his NCAA career over the last four years (with the exception of last season of course). You couldn’t expect much more from a seventh-round pick. In fact, you probably shouldn’t have expected what we did see from him.
What has impressed me the most?
Through a difficult third season at Boston University where he saw his ice time greatly diminished, Gallagher didn’t pout or complain. He got back on his horse and put in the work to get back to where he belonged. It speaks volumes to his character and leadership.
