The Providence Bruins announced today that they have signed center/left wing Jake Schmaltz to a one-year American Hockey League (AHL) contract for the 2025-26 season. This move also includes an Amateur Tryout Agreement (ATO) for the remainder of this season.
Early Days in the USHL
Schmaltz began on his path in the USHL, where he played three seasons from 2018 to 2021. He started with the Chicago Steel before moving to the Green Bay Gamblers. During his time in the league, Schmaltz honed his skills as a forward, showcasing his ability to contribute both offensively and defensively. His performance in the USHL caught the attention of scouts, leading to his selection by the Boston Bruins in the seventh round (192nd overall) of the 2019 NHL Entry Draft.
Collegiate Success at the University of North Dakota
Following his USHL stint, Schmaltz committed to the University of North Dakota, where he played four seasons in the NCAA. Over 147 career games with the Fighting Hawks, Schmaltz tallied 20 goals and 43 assists, amassing a total of 63 points. His leadership qualities were evident during his junior year when he was named an assistant captain by his teammates. Schmaltz was known for his reliability at both ends of the ice, excelling in faceoffs and blocking shots when needed. However, following his freshman year where he had 8 goals and 16 assists in 39 games, he never seemed to find his offense.
The Move to the Providence Bruins
The signing of Schmaltz by the Providence Bruins marks an important step in his professional career. Standing at 6-foot-2 and weighing 190 pounds, Schmaltz brings a combination of size, skill, and work ethic to the team. His journey from the USHL to the NCAA and now to the AHL reflects his dedication and growth as a player. This contract provides him with an opportunity to prove himself at the professional level without Boston having to commit one of their 50 contract spots with an NHL deal.
This is a similar situation to the Ty Gallagher contract agreed to last week, although Gallagher’s was for two seasons. It’s up to both players now to prove they are worthy of an NHL contract.
This signing not only strengthens the Providence Bruins’ depth for a playoff push but also highlights the organization’s commitment to developing young talent. Schmaltz’s journey serves as an inspiration to aspiring hockey players, demonstrating that perseverance and dedication can lead to success.
Jonathan Myrenberg, who is in Providence but has yet to sign a contract, is the only prospect remaining that the Bruins must get under contract or lose his rights (June 1, 2025).
