The Boston Bruins announced today that they have signed netminder Brandon Bussi to a one-year contract extension. Bussi, who was one of three Bruins netminders about to hit restricted free agency, was arbitration eligible.
The deal is a two-way, one-year deal that will pay him $775,000 in the NHL and $100,000 in the AHL. When the new deal expires at the end of the 2023-2024 season, Bussi will once again be a restricted free agent with arbitration rights. He remains waiver exempt.
The Bruins signed Bussi on March 30, 2022 to a two-year contract as a free agent after completing three seasons at Western Michigan University where he posted a career 46-25-5 record with a goals against average of 2.61 and a save percentage of .910.
He began last season with the Maine Mariners of the ECHL but then injuries in Providence forced a callup and he never looked back. He went on to post a 22-5-4 record, 2.40goals against average and .924 save percentage and earned AHL All-Rookie Team honors.
Bussi is currently the number three goaltender in the Bruins organization behind Linus Ullmark and Jeremy Swayman. With Ullmark on the books for a $5 million cap hit and Swayman, a restricted free agent himself looking for a big raise on his $925,000 cap hit, Bussi could find himself the number two man in the crease for next season.
