A total of 47 players have been invited to the showcase, which opens July 29. Team USA will be divided into two squads for the opening phase, with each group playing a pair of games before officials trim the roster down to a single team for the final three contests — the portion of camp that typically offers the clearest look at who’s truly in the mix for December.
There’s no guarantee a summer invite translates to a December roster spot. The WJC pipeline shifts fast, and recent history proves it. Will Zellers wasn’t even on USA Hockey’s radar for last year’s summer camp — then forced his way onto the final roster and emerged as one of the tournament’s breakout performers.
